Newbies say hello / Re: electric start for NF ?
« Last post by Il Feronne on June 20, 2022, 10:32:36 pm »
I have just acquired my first NF, a '74 military version after moving on my very trusty BMW R65.
It has the dynastart fitted, which the previous owner had purchased.

During a chat whilst we were waiting for the BACS to conclude, we discussed the technique of starting the NF.
He haf fitted the Dynastart when he first got the bike and quickly realised that the expense was unnecessary.

Having had the bike for a couple of weeks or so and gradually going through adjustments and and personal preferences I too realised the electric start is completely redundant. The bike starts so easily via the kick start that the handlebar button just takes up room better suited to a mirror!

My advice, don't. Save your cash for other things.

Welcome Sean. Fitting an electric start isn’t difficult if you can find the correct Bosch Dynastart (can be found, but expensive). You will need a smaller pulley too. Your best bet is to search this forum for Dynastart: you will find several posts on the subject.
The other side of the coin is that, although the Dynastart is mildly entertaining, with its silent starting, it’s really not necessary. The NF is very easy to start with the kickstart, and will start first kick every time unless something is wrong.

Hi John

Ive also got a  70 NF from the yugo army . It was imported to uk  with tonnes of other military surplus in 2008 , Ive since moved back to NZ and its still a sweet runner..no major  work required thus far .  fork seals and control cables needed replacement  but not hard to track down  those sorts of things . Panniers ,leg sheilds , screens are much harder to find .this forum  has helped me alot  and as jake says, the paul  friday  resources  are the place to start . Sure theres not heaps of traffic here but there are lots of guys  way  more clever than i am with engineering  that can  help  get the bike sorted. Im interested that a load of bikes  ended up in Aussie , i had not heard of that  story , do you know any details ?  Ive heard theres another bike in Auckland , a mate even claims to have seen and heard it ! but    most people i  speak too at rallies  have never seen one  so it does get a fair bit of attention .
cheers
Ric

Newbies say hello / electric start for NF ?
« Last post by sean on June 06, 2022, 04:33:29 pm »
Hi all,I am new to this group and don't as yet own an NF,a very good friend is going to sell me his letter this year or early next year. (I will be bringing it back from france, where it has been for most of its life) As I age my !000s is becoming a bit of a handful to lug around ,the garage on and off the stands etc, although riding it is lovely, so the idea of the NF is a kind of downsize. The only thing that concerns me is the lack of electric start, having had one for the last 30 years,I have kind of got used to it.Is fitting one to an NF something people do, and if so ,how easy/hard is it?
Thanks in anticipation.
Séan .

Electrics / Re: Dynastart- relay or no relay

I wish I had remembered that this thread was one here, having spent the past few days trying to fix the Dynastart on an ex-Police bike I picked up before lockdown, and which turned out to be in considerably worse condition than described. In a sulk, I pushed it away and pretended it wasn't there, until last year, when a minor issue with my other one forced me to pull it out. To cut a long story short, the Dynastart didn't work, and some minor investigation revealed that the belt was slipping, and too slack, even on maximum adjustment. Some more investigation revealed that the belt was too small to fit over the flywheel, but despite attacking the locking ring with my impact gun, it refused to loosen off, so I reverted to kickstart, and forgot about it again. This month, I was doing some more work, to replace the coil and condenser to try and resolve a persistent misfire at low rpm, and decided to have another go at the flywheel. This time I locked the flywheel using a standard G-clamp, bearing on the kickstart, with a sheet of lead flashing between for protection. The locking ring was already chewed up badly where someone had attacked it with a chisel, so I selected a blunt punch and with the flywheel locked, it came loose easily. Reversing the clamp to the front of the flywheel, and bearing onto the frame (lead sheet again) got the retaining nut loose, and bearing against the locking ring, drew the flywheel easily off it's taper, after I had given it a couple of sharp taps on the circumference to break the taper.

Having forgotten the existence of this thread, I had to 'reinvent the wheel' and guess the smaller size of belt required. I went for 637mm (25") and a 10mm width cogged type (XPZ637).

When I first put it on, I couldn't get it over my ;pulley, which is about 72mm outside diameter, even with the adjusting bolt removed. However, I discovered that the clutch cable, which is routed below the body of the Dynastart, was preventing it from lowering to the casing. After removing the cable, I managed to get the belt on, and job done. Next is to replace the hideous and dangerous solenoid that the previous owner had fitted below the tank, with exposed terminals, horrible wiring, and all tied up with an inner tube and tape... Also want to fit a fuse between battery and the main power lead, as of course there is no protection at all, and a short could lead to a fire. Does anyone know the maximum current drawn by the Dynastart? I read somewhere that they may be rated at 900W, so the maximum current would be about 75A?

Hi. I've just acquired a 1970 Falcone Nuovo. It's one of a group that was discovered here in Australia that was formerly property of the Yugoslav army. I'm primarily interested in getting an English translation of the workshop manual and hooking up with other Falcone owners here in Australia. Anyway I appreciate the existence of this group, despite a downturn in traffic. Cheers John

Welcome JT. If you navigate to the links section, you will find the NF resources I've gathered over the years. The Paul Friday files are a good starting point: big download but worth it.

Should I be concerned about the valves with modern unleaded petrol? Cheers John

Wotcha.

I've been running mine on unleaded since 2003 - nothing bad has happened yet.
