Engine and Transmission / Re: Backfiring at Low Revs

Thanks Banquo. I will try a carb swap as soon as I gain access to my other bike. New coil and and leads are ordered.

See the rest in the adrider forum.

Not sure what exactly caused the backfire, but I managed to fix it by:
  • adjusting the points gap,
  • changing the battery,
  • and replacing the spark plug.

I made a timing tool from wood that screws on to the engine and tried to set the dynamic advance using a timing light. The problem is that I measured the point on the flywheel with a continuity tester where the points close and open (AF10), but the timing light shows ignition at points closing(somewhat before AF10) and not at opening.

The valve clearance was 0.3mm exhaust and 0.2mm intake. I left it alone. Will this damage my valvetrain?

Engine and Transmission / Re: Petrol in the engine oil

Mine needs to be rebuilt because of this, but I rode it for a thousand km with the crankcase full of petrol.

In your case I think anything will happen and if something has worn out then you'll hear it.

Engine and Transmission / Backfiring at Low Revs
« on: April 14, 2019, 02:30:44 pm »
Hi All,

I bought a second NF until until my old engine is rebuilt.

The new bike startes easily, but it is backfiring heavily at low revs and will stall unless I turn the choke on.

I ultrasonically cleaned the carb and the fuel tap is supplying enough fuel.

Basically is it backfiring at low revs and won't run without choke.

I've searched the internet and it looks like the cause could be anything:
  • Lean condition at low engine speeds (pilot jet problem).
  • Ignition (advance) issues
  • Incorrect valve clearance
  • Burnt valves

I don't know where to start. How do I diagnose this?

Best regards,
Kris

I changed the fuel taps and cleaned the carb.

The fload axle was bent which resulted in fuel leaking into the cilinder and engine oil.

Going to rebuild the engine this year.

Hi,

how can I check the charging system?

Normally on bikes there is an acceptable voltage range measured at the battery at a certain RPM. Do you know these values for the NF military?

Hi,

which notch should I mount the needle to slide with? I have a VHB29A stock military NF with a V10 needle.

Hi,

how can I renew my fuel taps (NF Mil.), mine either leak or are stuck open?

Thanks.

I turned it around and now it seals better.

That explains fuel disappearing from the tank when I leave it standing long.

I cant seem to be able to turn the fuel valve on one side to close it and on the other side if I turn the valve handle the screw under it turns with it and starts leaking.

Hi,

should the spike point forward or backward?

I don't think that any of these is a must, but you can:
- increase compression
- bore it out
- install improved oiling and additional filter
- change oil pump for a bigger one
- install a second sparkplug
- change rear sprocket
- change the screen oil filter to a modern one

Not sure if this is on topic but someone here in germany is selling a modern filter from another bike that according to him fits the NF perfectly.

Engine and Transmission / Bogging and backfire on acceleration
« on: October 30, 2016, 05:46:08 pm »
HI,

finally got the papers for my NF and took an 80km ride.

I noticed a strong smell of fuel from the exhaust when stopped.

If I open the throttle fully while doing 80kph or so the engine boggs down and I hear a loud bang(backfire). If I'm careful with the throttle then I can reach 100kph, but slowly.

Is this normal?

Regards,
Kris
