Newbies say hello / Re: Photobucket is gone (effectively)
« on: July 16, 2017, 10:56:54 am »
Sorry to read your post Jake. It was finding this forum that helped me locate my NF, in fact being able to buy Paul Friday's well travelled Nuovo Falcone, which I am glad to say is still going strong. This forum has been a mine of information and in its early days I contributed posts charting my experiences, while setting up the timing and carb to cope with the extra power, due to the special modified cylinder head that came with the bike.

Regarding Photobucket, I have used it to post pics on other forums (I have a fieldsports blog) and found it difficult to upload images, in comparison to Imgur, much favoured by other large forums like Reddit. Since using Photobucket, I have been bombarded by their ads and switched back to Imgur, which is still a free photo site.

Unfortunately, since the rise of Facebook, Twitter, etc, forums in general have suffered, an example being a fly fishing forum, which five years ago had an active live community of many anglers, with up to twenty pages of comments each season, but has only attracted two pages this season, most of them mine.

I have to admit that I have not posted on here for some time, tending to dip into the Facebook page, that has a growing international flavour, which is also down to you Jake.

My own blog has a worldwide following and a continuing software problem caused the site to be down more times than it was online recently, with the loss of many returning visitors. It could have cost a lot of money to fix, but with a software developer son, I got a free pass and the numbers are growing again. As the owner of the site, you feel personally responsible for anything that goes wrong, but can only do what you can personally afford.

As a text only forum, this is still the go to NF site and can only suggest you encourage the use of Imgur in the future.

Regards, Ken

Thanks Nick. It's dry and sunny here today and about 6C, but with frost in the shade, the NF is staying in the garage. You put us soft Brits to shame.

Another well put together tale Jake. I saw a very sad looking TR25 at the Kempton Autojumble a few weeks back, for £2000!

My brother rebuilt to a good standard, a B25 Barracuda several years ago, which consistently failed to arrive, or return from many of our rideouts, finally blowing the bottom end up in a big way. After the rebuild, including a new piston, it refused to start when hot. In fact it was the last bike that I managed to bump start, racing style. To a very appreciative pub carpark audience, I might add. It is finally sorted and a fun bike to ride, but he won't take it more than ten miles from home now. What were BSA/Triumph playing at? They handed it over to the Japanese on plate.

I said to my bike riding son, that I would leave my BSA Goldstar to him, as I only have a few good bike riding years left. He said "Sell it and take mum on a round the World trip. I won't ride it, the tyres are too narrow". There speaks a young man, that has spent many miles breathing in the exhaust fumes of the Goldie, as we beat up the A and B roads on our way to various events. He wouldn't feel safe without his disc brakes and sticky tyres. In twenty years time, I think they will going to the scrap yards, like they were in the 60's.

Found this pic of me at the Manx GP a few years ago, not an NF, but one cylinder and 500cc. I was in heaven and can't understand why anyone would not want to own this bike.

Virtual Rally / The Demise of the Classic Biker

I have just read a very interesting article on classic bikes and their riders by a certain Jake B, in an obscure Scottish motorcycling monthly called the "Banter". I could precis it here, but wondered whether, through the wonders of the Interweb, the writer may just read this post and publish it on this NF Forum, as owning Modern Classics as we do, it would be of general interest.

Well done on the ride Jake. It's good to have a purpose to head out, although a cup of tea and a cake by the sea, always seems to work for me. With reference to your grandpa, any connection with the Beatson building supply chain?

The pic was taken at the Popham Mega Meet last year, the Harley being between my NF and friend Eric Patterson's 1150 side valve Brough, who I rode down with. Later that year, riding a special framed OHV 1150 Brough, he set an AMA record at Bonneville Salt Flats recording a time over 124 mph average. This year he return with a Manx framed Vincent and set a new record at over 132 mph. Not bad for a 68 year old pensioner.

The Paul Friday Resources! / Re: The ideal head job

Good to see Paul on the new Forum. What that man doesn't know about the NF.....?

Having bought Paul's bike, I can confirm that once I'd sorted out the jetting, fitted a K&N filter and a free flowing exhaust (it's certainly not a silencer) it goes like the clappers. Running on the original 34 tooth rear sprocket, I was clocked at 90 mph by a friend following on a modern Triumph. It blew a head gasket shortly after!

By doing plug chops, I ended up with a 140 main jet, which runs slightly lean. One higher may be better, but haven't got one to try. I had a few blown head gaskets, but now it's torqued to 40 lbs, no problems. While I had the head off on first inspection, I took 2mm off the overall diameter of the push rods (drumsticks) and matched in the tapers, also grinding down the steel cups to match, while narrowing the lock nuts on the rockers. With the lighter valves, the reciprocating weight of the valve train has been greatly reduced, allowing a safer upper rev limit. I've no idea what the engine was revving to, when I was clocked at 90, but it was high.

With twin plugs, the timing can be retarded due to the shorter time needed to burn the fuel. I read that Porsche engines were retarded by 10 degrees, when switched to twin plugs, so aimed towards that. On the NF, this equates to zero static timing. At this, my NF really barks, being extremely loud. Advanced to 4 degrees static, seems to give a softer engine at tick over. There is a definite power band, when the engine changes rapidly from plodder to racer. To harness the extra power (??) I fitted the shiny new 31 tooth rear sprocket in the spares kit, that Paul included with the bike. The sprocket transformed the bike, giving a usable first gear and motorway cruising speed of over 70 mph, with an overtaking speed of 85 mph readily on tap. I have no desire to test the flat out speed on this gearing.

My early intention was to skim 10lb off the flywheel, but I like the easy one swing start and slow tick over pace of the bike, feeling that I have the best of both worlds at the moment. Once the weight is taken off, it can't be put back on.

Did you get a measurement of the compression ratio Paul?

I remember that article. Classic Bike Guide, I seem to recall. I was intending to cafe-racerise mine to start with, but the original grew on me. Got as far as taking off the leg shields, air filter and exhaust. Quirky, fast enough and reliable, that's how I like it.

Just in case you ask, yes, my bike has alloy rims. When they were fitted, I've no idea?

Gear changing can be confusing. Tried changing down with my heel, when approaching a roundabout too fast on the Goldie one day. Thank goodness for decent brakes!

Sorry Guys, I seem to have a split personality, hence my other two bikes.

My Harley. Had this seven years. Very powerful 1450cc with fuel injection.

My 1956 500cc DBD 34 BSA Goldstar. Rebuilt this in 1997 and still going strong. It's what your right leg is for.

It's nice to have a cafe to ride to. The bike sounded great, showing it's Jekyll and Hyde character. My Harley has been put away for the winter, the NF is sitting pleading to be let out of the garage.
