Should I be concerned about the valves with modern unleaded petrol? Cheers John

Wotcha.

I've been running mine on unleaded since 2003 - nothing bad has happened yet.

Hello,

I am a 61 year old Guzzi fan from Flanders in Belgium. My Nuovo Falcone is an ex-carabinieri Falcone from 1970.

Wotcha.

I too am a 61 year old Guzzi fan - only I'm from the Midlands in the UK.

At least once a year a few of our motorcycle club members head over to Ypres for a week or so in the Summer.  This year we hope to be there from June 19th.  We will be using our usual camp site  http://www.jeugdstadion.be/

Most excellent.

I've never been one for the camper van and trailer brigade . . . . . .until it was forced upon me ten years ago.

I can still ride - I can't get in and out of a tent, so the answer was  a camper van and trailer.  OK - I refuse to attend bike rallies with this combination, but I still have the trike and trailer tent / dog kennel for such occasions.

According to the info sheet next to the small waterwheel . . . .it was set up in a stream, and would run unattended for years.  It's purpose was to pump water uphill to the local farm building.  Although it only pumped a small amount, because it was running 24 hours a day, it managed to provide enough water to fill a storage tank.

If you look closely, the water is being fed from the tank behind the wheel.

Looks gorgeous; bummer about the multiple regulator failure.
Does anyone know WHY the battery would cause this problem?

Wotcha.

That's the niggly bit.

We know it was the battery - but we don't know how or why it was causing this particular fault.

I've put another few hundred miles on the Guzzi and all is still happy.

Well it's all finished now  :)

There was an electrical issue which caused a bit of head scratching.
For some reason the bike was 'killing' solid state voltage regulators.  You could run the dyanstart on a test rig and all would be fine - as soon as it went back on the bike there would be no output from the regulator.

To cut a long ( and expensive ) story short, I took the bike over to Peter at Classic Dynamo Regulator Conversions.  He couldn't see any reason why this should be happening.  Eventually, after much trying, testing, re-trying we finally found the culprit . . . . . . the battery.  Once we tried another battery on it, everything worked fine.

I'd like to thank Peter Jury, of Classic Dynamo Regulator Conversion for his help and understanding in getting this problem sorted out.  Neither of us had ever come across a battery causing this kind of problem.  Still, it's all sorted now.

Took the bike for MOT - which it passed with no problems.  Then it was off for a test run - which had to involve a cafe of course.

What switchgear are you using on the left handlebar?

Wotcha.

It's a ( cheaply made ) pattern of a Suzuki switch.
It does all I need:  Lights on and off, dip and main, horn and indicators - oh, and a pass light too.

Here we are again.

Stainless exhaust has now been made (finished it earlier today ).

Engine runs - and starts off the button.

Sadly it's not charging.  I've checked the dynamo output and that's fine, so it looks like it may be the regulator.
This is a brand new regulator from Classic Dynamo and Regulator Conversions - it was bought new with the dynastart.
The regulator has been sent back . . . so as soon as that comes back the bike is as good as finished.

It will be off for MOT, then hopefully it will be getting a bit more use. . . .  time will tell.

Right - the wheels are now in.
The decals are in place.

Just  need to get the engine back in, then make up an exhaust system.

Oh - and fit and wire the starter ( wires are there - just need to connect 'em )

I would have put the engine in this weekend but it was our club rally, so as you can imagine I wasn't at home.

Thanks!
Did you note Randall's comment about the length required to fit over the flywheel?

Wotcha.

Sorry about the late reply - Thursday is bike club night.

Yep - just been in the kitchen ( don't ask ) and measured the flywheel.  270mm and the new belt will fit over it.

Excellent LW; my experience of belt drives goes back to the Fenner book in the early seventies, but I've never ever had to design one since, and things have clearly changed.
I take it the belt angle was something standard then?

Wotcha.

Yep - standard "wedge belt"   -  SPZ is the prefix  ( available on eBay for £3.39 inc postage )

A very skilled job, on both your parts...
I'm feeling humbled...  :-[
Using RAL is always a good idea.
FYI, the top hat tank rubbers are still available, although the top hat steel inners don't seem to be

Wotcha.

Rubber fuel hose, ¾ diameter - a bit of old Transit mudflap and a suitable hole punch - a sharp Stanley knife . . . . one set of new top hat rubbers  ;D

Wotcha.

Old pulley measured - and found to be 90mm.

Smaller pulley bought, along with a 17mm taper lock coupling and a suitable vee belt . . .  £12 . . . . let the fun begin.

That's useful LW - for the ignorant amongst us (me) can you please point to the taper-lock and the smaller pulley.
I don't know that system

Wotcha.

The pulley on the right hand side is the original Guzzi item.  It's 90mm diameter, and has a 15mm diameter hole in the centre.

Rather than make a new pulley, it's easier, cheaper and quicker to buy a ready made one.  They are available off the shelf and come in a wide variety of diameters ( and belt sizes too - both single and multiple groove ).

Now the snag with off the shelf pulleys is you need one suitable for your shaft diameter - that's where the taper lock bush comes in.  The taper lock bush is the small item in the centre of the picture.  These have an outside diameter to suite a range of off the shelf pulleys, and an inside diameter  ( I think they range from 10mm to about 30mm ) to suit your shaft diameter - in this case 17mm

The pulley on the left is the new smaller item - 70mm diameter and a large hole in the centre which takes the taper lock bush.

This bit of YouTube video shows how it all works . . . . I've used much larger ones when I was at work - for coupling the motor to the gearbox on passenger lift installations.
