Easter Saturday Ride
« on: April 05, 2015, 01:04:12 pm »
Not long or exciting, but very pleasant anyway.  I rode part of the same route on the Breva 1100 the previous day. It was a completely different experience to riding the NF.  Tons of power, handling, comfort and instant speed whenever you ask for it.  But here's the thing: I enjoyed riding the NF more. It's a weird thing!

Nuovo Falcone rambles: todays quick 87 mile loop.

Sorry about the crappy phone pic.

I took my NF out on Easter Sunday, despite feeling poorly enough to stay in bed... :-[

We went straight from winter into summer without warning, and the temperature rocketed to a balmy 20°C or 68°F-ish overnight. Despite riding through some spectacular scenery alongside Loch Earn and up Glen Ogle, the best I could manage was a quick shot of the bike when I got home, satisfied that the steering still worked after the new bearings, and the tank didn't fall off after fitting the new mounts...

You'll just have to imagine the morning mist rising off the Ochils, the sun sparkling off the surface of a mirror smooth Loch Earn, the ride up Glen Ogle, with the disused greatest stone railway viaducts of all time cut into the sides of the mountains, and the mug of tea at the summit, courtesy of the greasy burger van...

That looks like a nice ride and beautiful hills - although from Google Streetview, I prefer the look of the road on the south side of Loch Earn to the north.  I couldn't find the greasy burger van, but I like the look of the Land Rover dealership at the petrol station on the Crainlarich road.  Lots of traffic when they did the Google filming though..........

Was it third gear all the way up Glen Ogle?

I hope you're feeling better.

Nick

The South road is very scenic, but tends also to be very potholes and gravel strewn. It's appeared on the route of many vintage runs on which I've participated. The Garage is Lix Toll, the junction for the circular route taking in both Loch Earn and Loch Tay. I had cause to be very glad of it late one Saturday night, when, on a whim, I decided to drive my Hillman Imp from Dollar to Fort William to visit some friends, completely ignoring the lack of fuel stops on the way. I was on fumes by the time I got to Lix Toll, but although the petrol station was long closed, the owner (?) was busy fixing a Land Rover in the workshop, and was good enough to pull me the 6 gallons it took to fill it up. Must have been more than 40 years ago now...
They have done some pretty cool Land-Rovers too....
