Saying "Hello"
« on: July 19, 2015, 03:36:32 pm »
Just a note to say Hello. I am past my three score years and ten and gave up my much loved Triumph Daytona 955i as after 60 odd years of biking and kick starting my knees and legs are not what they used to be.  I managed to get a well sorted NF Militaire with (thankfully) electric start!  A lovely docile old lady and perfect for buzzing about Dorset.  It has been fully rewired and fitted with Boyer Bransden  ignition and also an exposed lightened flywheel.  The flywheel is painted but come the winter I intend to remove it and have it chrome plated.  Have already made the special tools to do this.

Hi Graeme Sounds like you have a well sorted falcone there. As a long term BMW owner I am just rediscovering my right leg due to the Falcone and my Indian Enfield. It is getting to the stage where I even start my 60/5 with the kickstarter. Enjoy your bike.

Welcome to the Virtual Owners Club Graeme.
You will be pleased to know that the NF can be started by hand (yes, really) if your starter packs in.
Hope you get years of enjoyment from your new steed.

Welcome - I hope you enjoy your new bike.  They are truly charming - but how can we tell without pictures (please....).

Thank you all for you good wishes. I will post a picture of my NF in the near future. Starting is instant, so I can understand that it can be hand started if necessary.  It is one of the easiest starters of all the many bikes I have had over the years.  One query I have is regarding the OMG fuel taps.  I thought they would be ON, OFF and RESERVE. However they didn't seem to quite work that way so I removed them to have a look.  The appear to be full flow (ON) half flow and OFF. Is this normal?

Quite normal.Use one tap for 'on' the other side for 'reserve'.Take your pick!
You may want to download the owners manual for more info. The parts book is handy too.

The 'correct' taps (square section plated brass) are either on or off, and generally the left is main, and right is reserve. They should actually be marked. That said, mine was fitted with two taps that were both reserve, so there was no reserve. The main taps should have a solid pipe rising up inside to limit how much it drains. I got rid of the tee piece and run only one tap now, with the other blanked off, as the range is so long you need to be really careless to run out. The only way to be sure what you have is to remove both taps for inspection. The tap rubbers swell and perish, but my good one has lasted 13 years without issues.

Just a quick query. I have a picture of my NF now but am unsure how to include in a reply. Any advice would be welcome,

Hi Graeme; the forum actually had some storage for uploads, but very limited and now full.
The way to make your pix appear as if by magic is to set up an online photo storage account.
I use Photobucket, because it's free, and because it's functionality is extremely good.
You can start here, by creating an account:
https://secure.photobucket.com/register?returnUrl=http%3A%2F%2Fs21.photobucket.com%2F
Once you have done that, you can start uploading your pictures.
Tip, give some thought to creating some albums, and how you would like them arranged before uploading. If you move a photo to another album after having posted a link to it on a forum, that link will be broken, and that's a pain, because nobody can see your photo, and only you can fix it by editing your post to show the new location.
Tip 2, resize your photos before uploading them. Typically, you want a file size smaller than what came off the camera, otherwise your photo will be far wider than the screen. I have a 7 megapixel camera, and usually resize to about 25-35% of original size before uploading. Saves storage space too.
Once you have uploaded your photos, they will appear in your album. If you hover your cursor over the photo, a number of options will pop up.
Choose links, and then click on the box beside IMG.
The location of your photo will be copied onto your clipboard, and you can paste that directly into your forum reply.
If you haven't done anything like this before, it probably won't be as simple as that, but if you get stuck, just shout...  8)
If I get time, I may create a thread on how to post via photobucket. We had that on the old forum, but Photobucket's changed a lot over the past year, so it needs redone.

Many Thanks Banquo for your helpful instructions and advice. I will have a go at photobucket over the weekend and see how I get on.
