Pannier idea?
« on: November 12, 2015, 09:55:37 pm »
hi,having a browse ref ideas for panniers which might compliment the NF. Found the Max Fuchs US Ammo Case Plastic Cal. 50 MM Large OD Green on Amazon UK..Not so pricey..lockable with padlock
Clearly modern but, might work with a simple unobtrusive frame. My search term was "ammo box"
Reasonable size too.  I now have thoughts of doing a more general search which might turn up something superior from sources other than Amazon. Any other  ideas regarding this issue ?
Thanks to anyone for their thoughts.

The real Militare steel panniers are well cool, and I consider myself very lucky to have picked up a Yugoslavian pair right on my own doorstep.
Just before that, I picked up a pair of ex WD steel ammo boxes from my local army surplus store for I think twenty quid the pair (I think they wanted £15 each). These are strong, easy to mount, and the lids are very well sealed, with an excellent latch that would be easy enough to lock. The correct frames for the stock panniers are very robust tubular items, bolting onto the rear footrest hangers and the top frame mounts, and winding around the rear of the mudguard, giving extra rigidity. You'll find some pix of mine on here, if you trawl around.

Hello Folks,
In considering panniers for the NF I have mused on the possibility of finding a modern panner rack which will, of course, take modern panniers, but which will also take a set of Classic Krauser panniersi have in store.
To an old guy the panniers are big money and if something used can be found..rack or panniers or both, which will fit, then any information is very welcome.
I found a rack on Ebay which i thought might work and it arrived today.
I am confident that it can work well on an NF with a minimum of fuss, but, as I know there are folks with lots of bikes including other MG's I thought I would put the idea out for consideration while I give myself time
 to look more closely.
Perhaps you or a mate has a bike like the one from which it was removed.
The rack arrived this morning and I am recovering from an operation so it will take me a while to provide chapter and verse.
Meanwhile I have the photos of the rack which were on Ebay along with some less good photos of the bike on which the seller had mounted the panniers should that be helpful.
I am not sure if the seller is going to be able to provide more specific product identification, but the rack is Hepco and Becker, the bike is a 2013 MG V7.
He used H and B 40 L. Junior panniers on the rack.
The rack looks as though it will attach on the passenger foot-peg bolt and, possibly with a simple L shaped bracket also on the rear attaching points for the luggage rack or rear attachment points for the pillion seat.
There is also a strut which lies horizontally behind the number plate which connects the rear parts of the two racks.
For now it looks like this strut might run immediately behind the number plate, but it can be reversed which could allow it to run between the plate and the mudguard.
Of course now you have the idea that the attachment points on the V7 may be similar to those on the NF you may prefer to look for another brand of rack and panniers like Givi which accomplish the same task.
If the end result helps anyone, i will be very pleased.
Meantime, when I am able I will post some photos of the rack on the V7 and do a bit more work to see if what will be required to make it fit the NF.
Not "correct", of course, but anything which allows more convenient, safe and pleasurable use of an already fine machine can be tolerated until something better appears.
Best wishes to all

David,  I too am a serial cheepskate/ modifier.
My 8valve Griso options for bags was very limited for this Thinking Mans GT so knowing the basic lay out of H-B hard bags and the frames, I purchased a pair of secondhand 30 litres with frame and top box from one of the small block guzzis poss. Any way the frame was close and a bit of jiggery and steel and I now have the lowest profile bag set, about 80 mm lower than the HB one which wasn't available at the time anyway. I did have to slip the Termi down the pipe a little to get fire proof bags tho' I melted a cheep indicator or two before getting it all sorted.
The rear connector is a solid steel rod so can easy be modified or replaced with rod to suit as i did
