I was lucky enough to buy mine 2nd hand from a forum member. I've not found any need for additional protection; my boot's a long way from the flywheel when planted on the footrest.
I have seen people fitting a small guard inboard of the footrest, something like this one fitted by Leafman:
And a wire one off Guzzitref:
That totally exposed flywheel is more hazardous than one with the special cover though; the special cover guards most of the perimeter, which would be much more likely to cause entanglement than the exposed face.
The Schubert covers are here I think:
PZ 10 00 02 01 Deckel Schwungscheibe , NF., gebr. poliert 136,85 (polished cover)
PZ 10 00 02 01 Deckel Schwungscheibe , NF., gebr. 116,62 (as cast)
PZ 10 00 02 01 Deckel Schwungscheibe , NF., Neu 153,51 (this may be an original stock cover, as it says 'new')Page 8 on this list:Best to check that's correct - it does say flywheel cover, and I assume it's not a stock cover, but caveat emptor....
Note: not the correct parts; see next two posts! There are at least 2 designs of replacement open covers available; mine is the one with Moto-Guzzi cast into the top (and IMHO looks far better than the other design), and I believe it's the SMS one, as confirmed by the following:
This is Bing's attempt at translating the Guzzitref article:
Brought flywheel to light
The consideration of how I (if you come to the required finish allows this) could show some more of the world this very decorative flywheel, already existed at the beginning of my Falcone time.
As I later thought to provide an original cover with slots a dealer it brought to my attention, that it is an outrage, first to destroy good original parts (he's right) and he was second just to make a small series of open motor cover. He described then removed the difficulties to establish a measure containing part of the cast, from the original cover workpiece to a certain amount will be smaller. Since technology experience required!
There are now 2 versions on offer, a normal
The prices are about 100 for normal or €124 for the polished lid. (As of August 2013)
So have I ordered the polished engine cover, get the next day and unpacked, found to be beautiful (and immediately paid). Threading the new behind the flywheel to remove the original engine cover, gently stopped, and then the Allen screws are replaced by shorter (M6 * 16 mm), (note the outer diameter) covered with thin slices of waves, and gently clockwise and gradually tightened. Then the flywheel made first makeshift city fine, so that no paint and rust are to see more. On the new component itself, no rework was required, the motor cover fits well and is voltage-free!
After the first drive experience is to determine that the flywheel must be definitely reasonable, smoothed, polished and ideally coated in order to prevent abrasion from clothing and footwear.
Also is an easy-to-dial protector (see photo) highly recommended to make trouble with the architect out of the way. Ingolf Schubert, offered as I know it from him, spontaneously his support. From September, he offered a footrest with guard for the open rotor.
At all, seems to make here a little advertising for a good service, its parts, see link:

This is a total perhaps not one of the "most reasonable" modifications, but really chic and what for the motorcyclists heart!
