Carburetor: Flip Up Choke
« on: August 06, 2017, 08:06:28 am »
Has anyone replaced their stock, cable actuated choke with one of these?

http://guzzino.com/flupchsh.html

Seems like a good way to eliminate a cable and the handlebar choke lever, and not too expensive.

There was some discussion about that very subject over the past few weeks. Can't find it on here, so assume it must have been on the Facebook group. IIRC, most thought it should work OK, if you don't mind losing the convenience of bar operation, but someone else thought it might not work, for reasons I can't remember. I'll see if I can find it.

I would be less inclined to switch if I lived in a colder environment where being able to adjust the choke is more critical.  In my area the choke is generally only required for startup and maybe a minute or so of warmup.

The only compatibility issue I can think of is clearance, but the lever top choke actuator shouldn't be any worse than a cable.

The previous owner of my Guzzi Ambassador installed these and they work fine on that bike.

I have tried and failed to find the previous correspondence. However, I do remember posting the exploded diagram for the VHB29, and it showed both flip-up and cable operated enrichener options, so my guess is that they are interchangeable. It's only a sealing plunger after all. Even in Scotland, I can usually flip off the enrichener almost immediately.

Looping back on this.

I had to slightly increase the counterbore diameter on my carb to fit the flip-top choke.  I read somewhere on-line that the early VHB carbs required this modification.  The previous owner of my 1970 Ambassador installed flip-top chokes, and it looks like the same modification was required on that bike.

Interesting; increase the counterbore where the plunger fits?
By how much?

Yes, the counterbore where the plunger fits.  The original counterbore is slightly too small.

I don't have the measurements in front of me, but the modification could be done with a hand drill as the depth of the counterbore isn't critical.

This doesn't seem to be documented anywhere.  I found one passing reference on a Dellorto supplier site indicating a slight modification was required for early VHB carbs.

Does this also apply to VHB 30 carbs?  A PO fitted the 30 to Bossom, and I have been thinking of replacing the choke with a flip-up

TIA
