Fuse Holder
« on: June 16, 2017, 12:11:07 pm »
Well, I've been having LOTS of fun lately!  Having changed the handlebars and fitted new clutch cable and levers, today I put the instrument binnacle back on, after first checking all the warning lights worked ok, which they did.
All up n running, then the neutral light stopped working  so checked gear lever position to confirm neutral, all ok, so off With the binnacle again.  First check bulbs, substituting a known working bulb with the neutral light one.  All bulbs working.  Confirmed that bulb holder is getting power, which it is.  Bulb holder off and it seems ok.  So, power there, bulb and holder ok, so why no neutral light, I wonder.  Then, of course something Touches something else, and I've blown a fuse.  Oh joy!  It would appear this bike has been rewired and a new bullet fuse holder fitted, in an inaccessible place.  I've got it off now, but I'm going to look into replacing and repositioning the holder so I can use the small blade type fuses.  I also need to find out where the neutral light switch is.  Hey Ho.......

The neutral switch resides behind the flywheel, and is notorious for issues. Personally, I find it pretty superfluous, and as mine works only intermittently, pay little attention to it.
It tends to work with a little wiggle of the gear lever.
Unless you have a very strong desire to have it back, I'd suggest leaving well alone. For me, a main beam light would be a lot more use than neutral, and I have toyed with changing the 'lights on' warning lamp to operate only from main beam.
Of course, being me, I'll probably never get around to changing it.... :-[

Thanks, banquet.  I traced the switch and may indeed leave well alone, although it's a bit late now, as I've stripped back the cover from the wiring to see what I've got.  The fuse holder, which is new, currently sits in the "tray" under the top tube. Is that where it should be?

No; the primary fuse holder is inside the headlamp shell, and uses those old octagonal or hexagonal section double-ended fuses.

It may be best to put it all back where it was, albeit in an inaccessible place. the new fuse holder has the old type of double ended fuses in it, and is placed more or less centrally between the headlamp and the battery location.
I suppose I could shorten the front leads and put the FB in the headlight shell and then lengthen those that come from the battery / regulator and the other  " fuse box" . As I say, I think I'll leave it for now!

Good morning, banquo, I hope you don't mind, but I emailed pics of the fuse holder etc., as I've not got round to learning how to post.  If you feel they might interest others, please feel free to put them on here.
Apologies, if I've inconvenienced you in any way by using your email address.
