Salut!
Meilluers voeux, Lee

Yes. Some great advice offered. I was unable to purchase a 70mm pulley anywhere and ended up having a friend of a friend machine one for me. Fitted the pulley and smaller belt  on Friday and it's working a treat.

I used to dislike kickstarting the NF, particularly since I injured my leg trying to kickstart a very recalcitrant Royal Enfield before Christmas, and the dynastarter has transformed the bike .

Thanks everyone

Just a quick Dynastarter update for anyone thinking of going down this route .........I've been using for a few months now  and I have to say that I'm finding that the benefits really do significantly outweigh the problems I had setting it up - kickstarting the bike was a big chore for me - 'wrong' side kickstarter plus a bit of pereneal nerve damage in my right leg from overenthusisatically trying to kick start a very reluctant Royal Enfield a few years ago makes kickstarting anything more than  a few kicks a little uncomfortable  , so I used to hate kickstarting the NF.

All the parts are pretty easy to purchase - I'd say that the biggest hassle was the pulley, as I seemed to need a smaller pulley than I had anticipated, to ensure adequate charge.

Having to kickstart the bike was a major downside of the bike for me -I used to particularly dread stalling it lights or junctions- as this entailed pushing to the side of the road, putting it on the main stand and then kicking it over - these days , apart from trying to not to stall the bike , if I do , now it's not a problem .

I am very grateful for the great help and advice I received from some members on the forum , and I  just thought some members may be interested in an update, some months down the line.

Wotcha.

I've got the dynastart kit from Paul * - it's currently sat in the kitchen ( and has been for months ) waiting to be fitted.

I'd best measure my existing dynamo pulley before I go much further.

*  EDIT  -  I think it's actually Peter.

Wotcha.

Old pulley measured - and found to be 90mm.

Smaller pulley bought, along with a 17mm taper lock coupling and a suitable vee belt . . .  £12 . . . . let the fun begin.

Yes, I've managed to start mine by hand too Randall, but not very practical if you stall in traffic!
Great video!

That's useful LW - for the ignorant amongst us (me) can you please point to the taper-lock and the smaller pulley.
I don't know that system

Wotcha.

The pulley on the right hand side is the original Guzzi item.  It's 90mm diameter, and has a 15mm diameter hole in the centre.

Rather than make a new pulley, it's easier, cheaper and quicker to buy a ready made one.  They are available off the shelf and come in a wide variety of diameters ( and belt sizes too - both single and multiple groove ).

Now the snag with off the shelf pulleys is you need one suitable for your shaft diameter - that's where the taper lock bush comes in.  The taper lock bush is the small item in the centre of the picture.  These have an outside diameter to suite a range of off the shelf pulleys, and an inside diameter  ( I think they range from 10mm to about 30mm ) to suit your shaft diameter - in this case 17mm

The pulley on the left is the new smaller item - 70mm diameter and a large hole in the centre which takes the taper lock bush.

This bit of YouTube video shows how it all works . . . . I've used much larger ones when I was at work - for coupling the motor to the gearbox on passenger lift installations.

Excellent LW; my experience of belt drives goes back to the Fenner book in the early seventies, but I've never ever had to design one since, and things have clearly changed.
I take it the belt angle was something standard then?

Yep - standard "wedge belt"   -  SPZ is the prefix  ( available on eBay for £3.39 inc postage )

Thanks!
Did you note Randall's comment about the length required to fit over the flywheel?
